Vermiculite is a hydrous phyllosilicate mineral which undergoes significant expansion when heated. Exfoliation occurs when the mineral is heated sufficiently, and commercial furnaces can routinely produce this effect. Vermiculite forms by the weathering or hydrothermal alteration of biotite or phlogopite.
At the interface between felsic and mafic or ultramafic rocks, such as pyroxenites and dunites, it often manifests as an alteration product. Carbonatites and metamorphosed limestone that is high in magnesium also contain it. Talc, serpentine, apatite, and corundum are some of the associated mineral phases. With phlogopite, biotite, and chlorite, it is found in interlayered layers.
Brake linings made of finer grades of exfoliated vermiculite are largely used in the automotive industry. Vermiculite has several features that make it a good candidate for use in brake linings, including thermal resistance, simplicity of mixing with other raw materials to produce a uniform mixture, shape, and surface characteristics.
The vermiculite concrete is also used in construction industry and has a wide application like:
- Lightweight aggregate for plaster, proprietary concrete compounds, firestop mortar and cementitious spray fireproofing
- As an additive to fireproof wallboard
- Component of the interior fill for firestop pillows, along with graphite
- Used in-ground swimming pools to provide a smooth pool base
- Light-weight insulative concrete
