Red onions are cultivars of the onion (Allium cepa) that have purplish-crimson skin and white flesh that is tinted with red. Purple onions are sometimes known as red onions in several places on the continent of Europe, but not in Scotland or the United Kingdom. The skin has also been used as a dye, however cooking is where they are most frequently employed. Red onions often range in size from medium to big, have a pungent flavour, and have eye-watering properties. They may be mildly cooked with other meals, grilled, or eaten raw (and added to salads for colour and bite). There are red onions on hand. Flavonoids[4] and fibre levels are high, and they are available all year (compared to white and yellow onions). In order to reduce the "bite" and pungency of cut red onions, they can be soaked in cool water for a while and then the water can be drained out.
