Detailed Information
One of the most efficient barrier materials available to the flexible packaging industry is ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH), particularly for providing an excellent barrier for oxygen and fragrance. The non-polar polyolefinic films cannot be used with the polar EVOH, though. In order to stick to a non-polar polyolefinic substrate, it needs an adhesion promoter or tie-layer resin, such as anhydride-modified polyolefin. Additionally, it is well known that EVOH copolymer films are challenging to orient and stretch. This is thought to be because EVOH molecules have a lot of hydroxy I groups, which readily form hydrogen bonds during the development of the non-oriented film.
The LLDPE can be unimodal or multimodal, preferably multimodal. A unimodal LLDPE possesses a single peak in its GPC spectrum as it is made in a single stage process. These terms are discussed in detail above in connection with the polypropylene layer. It is most preferred if the LLDPE is a multimodal LLDPE formed from a homopolymer component and a copolymer component. These polymers are well known in the art and are available from Borealis and others, e.g. under the Borstar type trade name.
